Death Stranding racing mode: How to unlock the race track and Roadster in the Director’s Cut

How to unwind from deliveries by hitting the track.

Death Stranding’s racing mode is a new addition in the Director’s Cut version of the game.

This mode will unlock once you have built a race track, allowing you to participate in a series of time trials, some of which pit you against high scores of other players.

Doing this also allows you to unlock the Roadster – a new vehicle which, while impractical on the rocks and mountains which make up most of the game’s landscape, is a speedy and stylish vehicle if you can find some flat terrain to drive it on.

How to unlock the racing mode and race track in Death Stranding: Director’s Cut

The race track is a structure new to the Director’s Cut version of the game, and will be already pre-built in the very south of the central region, south of the Timefall Farm, at the Racetrack Terminal.

Whether you can access this as soon as you reach the region, or must wait until a certain point in the game, is unknown, as we received an email from Thomas Southerland titled ‘Come Roar Around the Tracetrack of Your Dreams’ telling us about the location when we first transferred our PS4 save at an end-game state.

If you haven’t got this, it’s worth checking the map first to see if the Racetrack Terminal is there, or waiting until you have met Thomas Southerland (who is modelled after Edgar Wright) at the Distribution Centre south of Lake Knot City, who might send you the email and ‘unlock’ it that way afterwards.

When ready, you need to make your way to the Timefall Farm area, then head south to the Racetrack Terminal.

To build the Racetrack Terminal, you need to contribute some additional resources. These are as follows:

  • 130 Chiral Crystals
  • 450 Metals
  • 400 Ceramics

If you don’t have these in your possession, remember you can Claim Materials from a delivery terminal – such as at the Timefall Farm – so you can donate them.

Once that’s done, the race track is built, and you can take part in races!

How Death Stranding’s racing mode works

Races are straightforward time trials across a variety of track layouts using different vehicles. This includes a handful of preset race types, as well as Ranked Races which put you against times of other players.

You are allowed to boost, which will end once you collide into the side of the track (lightly brushing up against it, however, keeps your speed). The most important thing to know is you can handbrake with the Circle button – allowing you to take sharper turns at higher speeds.

Ultimately, the racing mode is a pretty simple but a fun diversion, and with the Ranked mode, a way to gain some extra rewards now and again when new race events show up.

How to unlock the Roadster in Death Stranding: Director’s Cut

Joining the racing mode is a new vehicle type, the Roadster. This is a fast, stylish vehicle which performs best on flat surfaces, such as highways – so try not to use it too much when scaling rough terrain.

To fabricate the Roadster anywhere in the game, you must enter a race using the Roadster at the race track. We unlocked this after completing a Ranked Race featuring the Roadster, but we imagine standard Time Trials will count, too.

Once you have completed the race, the design is yours to fabricate elsewhere. Enjoy!
