Rainbow Six Siege unveils new Australia-themed Outback map

With Rainbow Six Siege’s latest year of content updates looming on Xbox One, PS4, and PC, Ubisoft has offered a first look at Outback, the new Australia-themed map to be added as part of Year 4, Season 1.

Season 1, known as Operation Burnt Horizon, is poised to take Rainbow Six Siege to the intimidating expanse of Australia’s Outback, and introduces the aforementioned new map, new Operators, and more. The map, according to Ubisoft’s reveal post, is “an homage to all the dusty service stations and motels that populate the forgotten highways of the continent, places filled with hardworking locals and specialty menu items you’ll find nowhere else.”

The pitstop featured in the Outback map, which consists of a garage, motel, and restaurant, gets its own Rainbow Six Siege twist, thanks to the nuclear convoy that’s had a sort of crashy mishap in the immediate vicinity. Each section of the map is distinct, and players can find “rooms packed with souvenirs and cultural artifacts from many a roadside petrol station across the Great Southern Land.” Ubisoft also notes that players might spot “our friendly resident mascot, Norman, in the restaurant, though we do ask that you try not to stare.”

According to Rainbox Six Siege’s assistant level design director Jacques Wong, the new map has been built to emphasise decision-making and “a style of gameplay that players have enjoyed in the past”. While doors are limited, Wong explains that “Roamers can still create new paths by destroying walls, and there’s always the option of changing floors as a flanking strategy. It’s a medium-sized map, so players won’t need to go far to find alternative routes.”

Ubisoft also recently teased two new SASR Operators coming to Siege as part of its Year 4, Season 1 update. Described as “two old mates from way back”, one is “a stoic Attacker who’s just there to get the job done, and the other is a quick-witted Defender who’s in it for the guts and glory”. Apparently this formidable duo also has access to a device “that’ll keep roaming Defenders on their toes, and one that’ll leave Attackers at a bit of a loss.”

A full reveal of Operation Burnt Horizon will occur during the Rainbow Six Siege Invitational, to be held in Montréal on February 17th. You can watch the whole thing unfold via the Rainbow Six Twitch channel if you’re curious to know more.
