Souls-esque boss rush adventure Sinner: Sacrifice for Redemption is out this month

Developer Darkstar has announced that its vaguely Souls-esque boss rush action-RPG, Sinner: Sacrifice for Redemption, will launch on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Switch on October 18th.

Sinner: Sacrifice for Redemption follows the sombre combat-focussed adventures of Adam (yet more proof that real-world names always sound slightly silly in a fantasy setting) as he journeys through a “dark and forbidding realm” in order to “understand and deal with his past.”

This especially bleak journey of self-discovery takes the form of eight “hard but fair” boss battles, each inspired by one of Adam’s past sins. By Darkstar’s own admission, the whole thing is heavily inspired by the Souls series, with a spot of Shadow of the Colossus thrown in, but it sounds like the game does plenty to forge its own identity.

Its most fascinating addition is a mechanic wherein Adam gradually ‘levels down’ as events unfold, with players forced to sacrifice their strength and stats to best the bosses in their path.

Regular Eurogamer contributor Edwin Evans-Thirlwell liked Sinner: Sacrifice for Redemption a fair amount when he put two of its bosses – “a crow wizard who’s overfond of homing projectiles and a headless giantess in an armour-plated ballgown” – through their paces at EGX Rezzed earlier this year. “It lacks the finesse and grandeur of From’s best work,” he said, “but it’s pleasantly merciless and quite easy on the eyes”.

Sinner: Sacrifice for Redemption is coming to Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 18th, and a PC version will follow a little later this year. It will be launching exclusively on the new Discord Store (for around three months, going by Discord’s previous words), and should be heading to Steam – others stores are unconfirmed – after that.
