Developer Zoink Games – the studio behind Stick it to the Man, Fe, and Flipping Death – has announced that its adorable virtual reality puzzle-adventure Ghost Giant will launch on PSVR on April 16th.
Ghost Giant – a collaboration between Zoink and Swedish writer Sara Bergmark Elfgren – tells the story of Louis, a young boy living on a sunflower farm, on the outskirts of town, with his mother. “Life isn’t always that easy though,” explains Zoink, “and Louis is incredibly lonely”. That’s where you, in the role of the titular Ghost Giant, come in.
Ghost Giant is somewhat reminiscent of last year’s wonderful VR adventure Moss. As in that game, players are cast as a towering, omnipotent presence, able to manipulate the world around them in order to assist their tiny charge – in this case Louis.
Zoink calls Ghost Giant a sandbox-y “puzzle adventure”, and the core of the game appears to involve exploring the nearby town of Sancourt and helping Louis and the local residents complete different tasks. “Use your see-through hands to lift furniture, vehicles and trees,” says Zoink, “you can even rotate and open entire buildings to reveal the stories going on inside.”
It’s a compelling enough premise, but Ghost Giant’s glorious presentation is what really sells the experience. It looks utterly delightful, rendering Sancourt as an vibrant, eccentric paper craft tumble – and that alone is enough to make me want to explore its world.
Although Zoink’s ecological action-adventure Fe was a little divisive, Flipping Death and Stick it to the Man were enormous fun, and I’m genuinely excited to see how the studio’s talents translate to VR when Ghost Giant arrives as a PSVR exclusive on April 16th.
