Telltale says it’s “actively working towards” completing The Walking Dead’s final season

When mass layoffs at Telltale Games were confirmed last week, questions remained about the fate of its currently ongoing final season of The Walking Dead, and whether it would reach its conclusion. The developer now says that it’s “actively working towards” finishing remaining episodes.

The Walking Dead: The Final Season is designed to wrap up the story of protagonist Clementine, which began almost six years ago with the advent of Telltale’s first, critically acclaimed Walking Dead season. The concluding chapter was intended to span four episodes, only one of which has been released to date. Unsurprisingly, last week’s news cast serious doubt on the remaining planned episodes ever seeing the light of day.

Further reports from ex-staff and collaborators over the weekend seemed to confirm that the series was indeed cancelled, and unlikely to be completed given that the entire Walking Dead team had been laid off. In a new statement released on Twitter, however, Telltale has now offered official word on the series future, saying that “multiple potential partners have stepped forward to express interest in helping to see the The Final Season through to completion”.

While the developer said it “can’t make any promises today”, it did seek to assure fans that it’s “actively working towards a solution that will allow episodes 3 and 4 to be completed and released in some form”. It also noted that The Final Season’s second episode will still launch on September 25th as originally planned.

Telltale managing to complete The Final Season would be a positive note to end on, in an otherwise unhappy set of circumstances, giving fans the opportunity to see and celebrate the labours of the team that worked hard to bring closure to Clementine’s story and the series as a whole. By the sounds of it though, that’s still far from guaranteed.

Telltale concluded that it “hopes to have answers for your other questions soon”.
