Wordle hints (game #691) – clue #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has vowels in two places*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #691) – clue #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is B.

B is a very, very common starting letter in Wordle. In fact, it’s the third most common overall, behind only S and C.

Wordle hints (game #691) – clue #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There is one repeated letter in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle hints (game #691) – clue #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is M.

M is a middling ending letter: it ranks 13th in this regard, and only completes 46 Wordle answers overall.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #691) is… BROOM.

On the face of it, this shouldn’t be too hard, right? B is a very common starting letter – in fact it’s ranked third in this regard, behind only S and C. R is a very common second letter, too; again, it’s ranked third. O? Well, that’s ranked – yes – third in the middle of a word. There’s a pattern here.

Only there’s not, because two Os is a lot less common, as is an M at the end. And what’s more, there are quite a few other answers that have most of the same letters.

Put all that together and you have quite a tough Wordle, and one that has an average score of 4.4 – so almost at difficult as Monday’s COCOA and worse than Sunday’s AGLOW.

It’s also one where none of the best Wordle starting words will have helped much. None of them! My choice, STARE, left 123 possible solutions. SLATE, WordleBot’s favorite, left 308. ADIEU, the most popular choice left 216. CRANE (66) and TRACE (60) were a bit better, but none were close to single figures. For yesterday’s ETHIC, remember, I had just two solutions remaining after my first guess (see below).

Whereas with that game I merely had to find an answer that fit – something that proved a tricky task in its own right – today the problem was that there were too many answers.

I had a yellow R, but nothing more. Would this be a word that started with that R – maybe ROUND or RIGID or RUMOR? Would it be one that ended in a Y – for instance ROCKY or RUNNY or GIRLY or WORDY? More likely, would it one where the R went second, after an opening C, F, G, D, B or P: CROWD or FROCK or DROOL or GROUP or BROWN or PROUD.

In the end, I decided to cover off two of those options, with CRONY – the R was second, the Y at the end and the other three letters all common ones. Nice guess, said WordleBot, but wrong. However, that gave me a green R and O, and cut my options to 16. Not bad.

Trouble was, those 16 were all very likely: BROOK, BROOD, DROOL, DROLL, GROOM, GROUP and a bunch more. I needed to think hard about my third guess, or I’d be staring at a 5/6 or worse. Eventually, I decided PLUMB would work. It couldn’t be right, but by leaving out the R and O I could fit in two more unplayed letters. That was a fair compromise, and it worked brilliantly. Both the M and B turned yellow, meaning the answer had to be BROOM.

That gave me a 4/6, which I’ll consider a success today – not least because it was the same score achieved by WordleBot.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #690)

In a different time zone where it’s still Wednesday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #690, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had two vowels.
  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was E.
  • There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
  • The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was C.
  • Yesterday’s Wordle answer is a set of principles.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #690)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #690) was… ETHIC.

Some Wordles are just generally easy – or indeed, generally difficult. This is not one of those games. How difficult it is will probably depend to a large extent on what your choice of the best Wordle starting words is.

That’s true every game, to an extent, but today it really matters. My opener, STARE, left just two possible solutions; CARET and TRICE were at three, with STALE at five, CRATE and CARTE at eight and TRACE at nine. But others weren’t so fortunate: anyone who began with SLATE (114), SLANT (180) or ADIEU (61) will have struggled to get better than a 4/6 today, I suspect.

Oddly, I scored a 2/6 despite finding it one of the toughest Wordles for a long time! That’s because I simply couldn’t see any words that fit after my first guess. STARE had left me with a green T and yellow E, which was confusing; the only consonant that precedes a T at the start of a word is S, and that had just been ruled out. That meant my word had to start VOWEL-T-SOMETHING, and I simply couldn’t find any that fit.

I kept turning up options, then spotting a reason why they didn’t work: OTTER? No, I’ve already ruled out the R. UTTER? Same. OTHER? No, once again, IT CAN’T INCLUDE AN R.

Eventually, after at 20 minutes of trying to come up with a second guess, I realized that ETHNO would fit. I was about to play that, then decided that it would be unlikely to be a Wordle answer, as really it’s a prefix to the likes of ETHNOGRAPHIC, so I looked for other ETH words and finally came up with ETHIC. I played that with fingers firmly crossed and was rewarded with my first 2/6 for about three weeks.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website (opens in new tab) or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS (opens in new tab) / Android (opens in new tab)), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
