Today’s Wordle is a second rather easy one in succession; a rare occurrence in this game, where it’s more common to get a tough one whenever you start to relax a little.

A is a reasonably common starting letter in Wordle: 140 games begin with this letter. It ranks 6th among starting letters, behind S, C, B, T and P.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #693)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #693) is… ACRID.
As with yesterday’s game (see below), this is a rather easy one if your starting word is one of a few popular options. ADIEU, which is always the most commonly played opener, left just three possible solutions today, a figure matched by CARTE. CRATE (11) and CRANE (10) were also pretty good.
Certainly the reduced options for ADIEU players (and AUDIO too) will have brought down the overall average, which WordleBot says it at 3.6 compared to yesterday’s 3.7.
If you didn’t play that, and instead started with one of the best Wordle starting words (which ADIEU isn’t, usually), you may have had a tougher time. That said, I wouldn’t expect too many failures today. All five of the letters are common in Wordle, and there aren’t too many options once you find a couple of the consonants.
In my case, for instance, my opening STARE left me with 82 possible solutions, but my second guess reduced that immediately to just one!
My choice was CAROL, which WordleBot said was an excellent choice. On the face of it, not that much changed; the R turned green, sure, but the A stayed yellow. I did add a yellow C too, though, and that combination was enough to leave ACRID as the only possible answer. I played that next for my WordleBot-beating 3/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #692)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #692) was… SNACK.
I suspect this one wasn’t too bad for most people. The S at the start will have helped out greatly, given that many of the best Wordle starting words begin with one, including my own favorite, STARE, and WordleBot’s preferred SLATE. The K at the end might seem uncommon, but the K doesn’t feature among answers that often generally, at the end of a solution it’s the ninth most likely.
The biggest issue will probably be one of there being lots of similar answers. But even that will have been helped by some start words. CRANE, for instance, left just two possible solutions today: SNACK and KNACK. I sense lots of 2/6s will have been scored for those people who faced that dilemma.
STARE was slightly less helpful – I still had 31 possible answers – but I was able to narrow that down to just two options after my second guess. The key, for me, was thinking about which letters can go between an S and an A at the start of a word. There are quite a few: C (SCAMP), L (SLACK), P (SPAWN), M (SMALL), H (SHADY), N (SNAIL) and W (SWANK). Picking a second word that contained lots of those was therefore the objective, and I went with CLIMB. WordleBot preferred PLINK, but both worked well.
With a yellow C to now fit in, but some other key letters ruled out, it was a simple task to see what was left: namely SNACK and SHACK. This was a straight 50/50 with nothing to guide me one way or the other, but today fortune favored me and I guessed correctly for a 3/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website (opens in new tab) or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS (opens in new tab) / Android (opens in new tab)), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
