Wordle hints (game #701) – clue #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has one vowel*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #701) – clue #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is B.

B is a very, very common starting letter in Wordle. In fact, it’s the third most common overall, behind only S and C.

Wordle hints (game #701) – clue #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle hints (game #701) – clue #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is H.

H is a regular visitor to the final spot in a Wordle word. It occurs 137 times at the end of a Wordle answer, making it the sixth most common letter there.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #701)

Today’s Wordle answer (game #701) is… BRASH.

There’s a definite hint of deja-vu about today’s Wordle answer. Some of that is because it’s of identical difficulty to yesterday’s game, with WordleBot stating that people are completing it in 3.8 guesses on average. But it’s also due to the word itself being quite similar to yesterday’s FLASK (see below).

For starters, both have an A in the middle followed by an S. Both also have a common starting letter (B today, F yesterday), followed by one of the two most common consonants to appear in position #2 (R today, L yesterday). And both end in a letter that’s generally uncommon but that becomes very common at the end of an answer (H and K).

The same powers of deduction that got you to one will therefore have got you to the other, and indeed, the same choices out of the best Wordle starting words will have pushed you a long way along the path to success today.

My own pick, STARE, left just six possible solutions today (17 yesterday), while WordleBot’s favored SLATE was at 15 having been at seven for FLASK. ADIEU left 352 choices both days. All very similar.

With two yellows and one green after my first guess, I only had five solutions on my list: BRASH, CRASH, GRASS, BRASS and CRASS; I missed GRASP, which was a bit of an oversight! Fortunately, it didn’t matter today: I played CRASH thinking that at worst it would leave me with a 50/50 between BRASS and GRASS, and as it happened it was better than that, with BRASH now my own answer. I played that next and scored another 3/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #700)

In a different time zone where it’s still Saturday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #700, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had one vowel.
  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was F.
  • There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
  • The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was K.
  • Yesterday’s Wordle answer is a container.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #700)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #700) was… FLASK.

We’re still in the midst of an easy Wordle period, with only one puzzle with an average score of above 4.0 in the past nine days. Today’s continues that trend, coming in at 3.8 according to the NYT’s AI tool WordleBot, which I trust to get these things right.

FLASK could be complicated, in that it contains a K (not common in general) and has an S that isn’t at the start of an answer (not common in general). How easy it actually is will probably depend a lot on what your pick of the best Wordle starting words was. Don’t have one? Well, that’s your loss, because you’re get better scores and longer streaks if you do.

Today, WordleBot’s favorite start word, SLATE, left just seven possible solutions. Another of its top picks, SLANT, left eight, while my choice, STARE, was at 17. In contrast, those of you playing ADIEU – always the most popular choice – will have had to whittle down 352 answers!

There’s an obvious connection between the three that did well above, and that’s the fact that they all start with an S. Because S is relatively infrequent other than at the start of a Wordle answer, turning up a yellow one immediately gives you a head start. It probably won’t go in position #2, because only vowels can go before it, and the fact that I already had a green A in the middle allowed me to rule out that option – I couldn’t think of any word that had the format OSA– or ISA–, for instance. USAGE would have fit, but I knew there was no E.

So, that left –AS- or –A-A. I had a brief play around with my remaining letters and established that the former was more likely than the latter: FLASK, CLASP, CLASH, FLASH, AWASH, CHASM and QUASH were all on my shortlist. Two Ss at the end was also possible, with CLASS, GLASS or AMASS.

I decided that my shortlist was short enough that I could play a genuine answer rather than narrowing things down, not because I realistically expected to solve it in 2/6 but because CLASH would work as a nice narrowing-down option anyway.

And it did – with -LAS- all green now, I had just two possible answers left, in the form of FLASK and GLASS. WordleBot also said PLASM was an option, but I didn’t spot it and don’t know what it means!

I decided to go for the non-repeating option of FLASK and got lucky: it was correct and I scored a nice 3/6.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
