Happy Thursday, Wordlers! And it is a happy Thursday if you got lucky with your starting word today – because there are high scores to be had out there.
Of course, if things didn’t start so well then you’ll be wanting some Wordle clues instead, because this is a game that can easily trip you up when you don’t expect it. If you don’t want to risk a below-par score of 5 or 6, or even (gasp!) a fail, then you’ll want some hints.

W is a fairly average letter when it comes to starting an answer. There are 82 solutions that begin with a W, which means that it ranks 13th – so, right in the middle of the alphabet.

• There is one repeated letter in today’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Wordle today (game #628) – the answer
The answer to today’s Wordle, game #628, is… WHERE.
At first glance, this looks like one of the easiest Wordles ever. It’s certainly one of the most common words we’ve had in the game; it’s up there with the likes of THERE, NIGHT and TODAY in terms of how frequently we use it.
Its average score would also indicate it’s on the easier side: WordleBot says people are solving it in an average of 3.9 guesses, which is below the norm of 4. But but but… it isn’t necessarily quite so straightforward.
For one, there are lots of words that fit a similar pattern, depending on what you played for your first go. In fact, very few of the best Wordle starting words were actually much help today. WordleBot’s favorite, SLATE, left 123 possible answers; SLANT left 530. CRANE, CRATE, TRACE and CARTE were a bit better – they were all in the 40s – but that’s still too many for comfort.
There’s also the fact that it has a repeated E. This isn’t that uncommon in the game – after all, E is the most likely letter to be repeated in an answer, and getting two of them is more likely than getting one V, for instance. But it still makes the game slightly harder.
On the other hand, if you did get lucky with your start word then you really were in line for a high score today. That’s what happened with me: my favorite, STARE, left just seven possible answers, and duly set me on the way to a lovely 2/6 score.
As it happens, I didn’t find seven answers myself. Instead, I came up with four: WHERE, GENRE, OCHRE and CHORE. The other three that WordleBot considered were INURE, LUCRE and OMBRE, but while I don’t know for certain that they are not actual solutions, my guess is that they are not.
So, I was working on the assumption that I had a 1/4 chance. CHORE was possibly the most likely in terms of common letters, but WHERE is an even more common word. Whichever I went for, I’d be sure to score a 3/6 at worst, so I went with my gut instinct and played WHERE. The result was my first 2/6 for ages and a happy Thursday indeed.

Wordle yesterday (game #627) – clues

- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was L.

Wordle yesterday (game #627) – the answer
The answer to yesterday’s Wordle, game #627, was… REGAL.
I came away from this game with a feeling of relief – because it could have been a lot harder than it actually was. When my first guess uncovered yellow A, R and E, I was resigned to the fact that the answer would be one of those horrible -A-ER games – like PARER, CATER and GAMER, all of which have caused me problems in the past. Instead, it was the seemingly easier REGAL, a word which WordleBot says people are solving in an average of 4 guesses.
That puts it slap bang in the middle of the Wordle difficulty stakes, and indeed it feels like a fairly standard puzzle. All five letters are common, four of them particularly so; there are no repeated letters; and the word is a relatively well known one.
The challenge here was in narrowing down your options as quickly as possible, because common letters usually make for multiple solutions. That was the case for many of the best Wordle starting words today: WordleBot’s favorite, SLATE, left 42 possible answers and its other top picks (CRANE, SLANT, TRACE, CARTE) were all either around the same level or higher.
My own choice, STARE, left me with a mammoth 80 options to sift through – a task I didn’t even attempt. Instead, I decided to play a word chosen purely to narrow down the options: LACKY. This left out the E and R (which I guessed would go at the end of the word), but included the A in the second position to see if I was right about the -A-ER format.
And… well, I needn’t have worried. The A stayed yellow, while the L turned yellow too. This essentially ruled out an ER ending, as the only options were words that had the format AL-ER or A-LER, and I couldn’t think of any of those.
Instead, I identified four options: REGAL, RENAL, RELAX and FERAL. WordleBot says I had missed one – and it was an ER word, ADLER. But is that really a possible answer? I’d be surprised.
Anyway, REGAL seemed the best option out of those, because it would guarantee me getting no worse than a 4/6; if I’d have gone with FERAL or RELAX, I might still have been left with a 50/50 between RENAL and REGAL next turn.
As it happens, a fourth guess wasn’t necessary, because REGAL was the answer and I solved today’s Wordle in 3/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website (opens in new tab) or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS (opens in new tab) / Android (opens in new tab)), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
