Looks like Diablo 3: Eternal Collection won’t be cross-play after all

Blizzard has dashed hopes that Diablo 3: Eternal Collection will be available with cross-play.

Business Insider initially reported that during a demonstration, a Blizzard representative confirmed that console cross-play – which would enable Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One players to play together – was “a question of when, not if”.

The news seemed plausible given Sony recently reversed its decision to prevent cross-play, permitting PlayStation 4 owners to play with people playing on Nintendo Switch and Xbox One for the first time.

However, in a subsequent statement to DualShockers, Blizzard said: “While we love the idea of bringing our players together across platforms, we do not have any plans to implement cross-platform gameplay for Diablo at this time.”

It’s a curious statement, though, given the original report intimated the Diablo 3 team was “actively working” with partners at Sony and Microsoft, so it’s unclear if the dev was simply a little too excited and let the cat out of the bag too soon, or entirely misconstrued details about the team pursuing cross-play in the first place. I guess we’ll watch this space.

Diablo 3: Eternal Collection will release on Nintendo Switch on 2nd November, 2018. Aoife took a look at it and said the Switch port was “solid and dependable“.
